How to Deal with Stress on Your Weight Loss Journey

The question has been asked, how to deal with stress while on a weight loss journey? I could tell you what the experts say and give you references from health journals, but heck you can do that. I’m going to talk about how I handle stress while on my personal weight loss journey. If you ladies are anything like me, you just want the tea, straight up. So that’s what I’m going to give you.

The way I deal with stress (am dealing with stress) while on my weight loss journey is one moment at a time. I tried one day at a time, but I can’t make it without needing something sweet or a glass of wine by the end of the day (lol). I strive to be productive every day, not only in my weight loss journey but in my life which keeps the stress level down to a minimum. I make small daily and weekly goals that I know I can complete without feeling overwhelmed or coming down on myself for not completing what I set out to do. I take moments for myself.  After I leave the gym sometimes I sit in my car in complete quietness because for me that’s where my peace is. I post sticky notes in my car so that I can look at them to remind myself that I love myself and everything is going to be alright.

Stress for me stems from wanting to be perfect. (Even though there’s no perfect person), I still try especially if I say I’m going to do something, it has to be done perfectly or dang near. I put the pressure or stress on myself by trying to do too much, or expecting results too soon. I’ll start out lifting 10lbs and by the end of the week move to 20lbs, and when I can’t do as many reps as I could with the 10lb weights I get upset and a little bit discouraged. Or I’ll see somebody doing something on social media, I’ll try it and when it doesn’t work for me once again I’m upset and stressed out. Wondering why ”nothing is working for me”! It’s not working because I’m not being true to myself and taking the time out to see what works and doesn’t work.

I find that taking life slowly, making small goals, taking deep breathes, and praying my way through is the best way to manage stress while on this journey. When I need a minute, I take it. When I desire something sweet because I’ve been eating clean and drinking nothing but water, I eat something sweet. I find that the best way to manage stress while on this weight loss journey and every day is by forgiving, accepting and loving yourself. Forgive yourself for eating that ice cream, accept the fact that this is a process and it’s going to take time and love what you see in the mirror when you look at yourself. Remember you’re your only competition. There’s no one else like you. Yes we want to lose weight to look good in those jeans, but right now we look fabulous in the ones we already have. Stress comes from a lack of peace with in, and I can understand not having any peace within yourself because after going through the cares of life we compare our lives to what the people are doing on social media.  Throw in children and relationships and you have a breeding ground for stress.
